That is close enough that people assume they can drop in on it, and far enough that every version of the visit takes a full day. The useful question is not where the mountain is. It is <strong>how far in you are allowed to go<\/strong>, because the answer changes everything about the day: the altitude, the time, the price and whether you need a permit at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are five distinct ways to reach Aconcagua, and most guides treat them as one thing. This is the road, the two valleys that give access to the park, and what each level of access actually involves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Aconcagua is, precisely<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mountain stands in the Principal Cordillera of the Andes, inside Mendoza Province, and at 6,962 metres (22,841 feet) it is the highest peak in the Americas. It is protected within Aconcagua Provincial Park, and it is bounded by two valleys that matter more than any other geographical detail here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The Horcones Valley<\/strong>, to the west and south. This is the side you reach from the main road, the side the viewpoint looks at, and the way in to Confluencia, Plaza Francia and Plaza de Mulas. Every day visit uses this valley.<\/li><li><strong>The Vacas Valley<\/strong>, to the north and east. This is the approach to Plaza Argentina and the longer circuit routes. It is an expedition entrance, not a day-trip one.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which valley you enter decides which camps you can reach, and it is the single fact that no other guide to visiting Aconcagua bothers to state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The road from Mendoza: what you pass on the way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one route, the high mountain road west toward Chile, and it is genuinely one of the best drives in Argentina. Leaving Mendoza you climb through <strong>Cacheuta<\/strong>, with its thermal springs, then <strong>Potrerillos<\/strong> and its reservoir, then <strong>Uspallata<\/strong>, the last real town, where most tours stop for lunch on the way back. After Uspallata comes <strong>Puente del Inca<\/strong>, the natural stone arch that spans the Las Cuevas river above its hot springs, and past it, the entrance to Aconcagua Provincial Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No operator sells this as a half day, and that is the honest measure of the distance. No climbing experience, no expedition, no three-week commitment \u2014 and it is the closest most visitors will ever stand to the summit of the Americas. It has its own page in <a href=\"https:\/\/sakwinetravel.com\/mendoza-packages\/climb-aconcagua\/base-camp-hike\/\">our Aconcagua base camp hikes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you are going higher: the acclimatisation day nobody plans for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone attempting Plaza Francia or beyond needs altitude in their legs before they start, and the standard answer in Mendoza is the <strong>Cord\u00f3n del Plata<\/strong>, a separate range about 90 kilometres from the city \u2014 a two-hour drive rather than a three-hour one. From Vallecitos you climb Cerro Arenales at 3,400 metres and, if the day is going well, Cerro Lomas Blancas at 3,700, on safe high-altitude trails with condors and guanacos for company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a full day from USD 116, it is a genuinely good hike on its own terms, and it is the cheapest insurance you can buy against losing an expensive expedition to altitude. We grade all of it in <a href=\"https:\/\/sakwinetravel.com\/blog\/how-hard-is-it-to-climb-aconcagua\/\">how hard each level actually is<\/a> \u2014 the fitness each rung asks for, and why the Normal Route is a walk rather than a climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Permits: what needs one and what does not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The viewpoint is on the road at the park entrance, so reaching it is not an entry into the park. Everything past that point is: the Quebrada del Durazno trail, Confluencia, and every camp above it all sit inside Aconcagua Provincial Park, and every one of them is permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The categories run roughly from a day entry, through trekking permits of a few days, to the full ascent permit, and the province sets the fees fresh each season. They are paid separately from the cost of any tour. On our day programmes we handle the paperwork; on the multi-day treks and the expeditions the permit is arranged as part of the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing constraint matters more than the paperwork. The park issues trekking and climbing permits during a season that runs from mid-November to late February, and stops issuing new ones at the end of February. What you are looking at from Mendoza, and from the top of Cerro de la Gloria in the city park, is the front range. Aconcagua is 112 kilometres away and behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first place on the whole route where the mountain appears is the viewpoint at the park entrance, which is exactly why that viewpoint is where every day tour is built to end up. You come around the last of the road and the west face is in front of you, weather permitting \u2014 and the weather is a real condition, not a disclaimer. On a clouded day you will have done a beautiful drive and seen no mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fitting Aconcagua into a Mendoza trip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high mountain day is the one plan we recommend to almost everyone, wine drinkers included, and it has to be its own day. It does not combine with a winery, a spa or anything else: the road takes what it takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>On a three-day trip:<\/strong> one day here, one wine region, the city in an evening.
