Las Leñas is where serious skiers come to disappear for a week. Sitting 3,430 meters above sea level in the Argentinian Andes, this is South America’s most dramatic ski resort, steep couloirs, open off-piste bowls, and powder that can fall for days. Planning a ski vacation in Las Leñas from abroad takes local knowledge. That is exactly what SAK Wine & Travel brings to the table.

As a Mendoza-based operator, we know this mountain in a way that no international agency can match. Whether you are planning your first ski vacation or you have been chasing powder across the Southern Hemisphere for years, we build the trip around you, your dates, your group, your pace on the mountain.

Las Leñas Ski Resort: Terrain & Mountain Stats

Few resorts in the Southern Hemisphere compare to Las Leñas on paper, and even fewer deliver on the promise. The resort sits entirely above the treeline, with open bowls stretching in every direction and a vertical drop of 1,200 meters from summit to base. The numbers tell part of the story: 29 runs across 17,500 hectares of skiable terrain, a base elevation of 2,240 meters above sea level, and 13 lifts including doubles, quads, and poma lifts. The longest uninterrupted descent runs 7 km.

But it is the off-piste that earns Las Leñas its reputation among those who have skied here before.

Expert & Off-Piste Terrain

The Marte chairlift is the heart of Las Leñas for advanced skiers. From the top, you access a wide-open bowl that feeds into dozens of chutes and couloirs, some pushing 48 degrees. Eduardo’s Couloir is the benchmark line, steep, consequential, and the kind of run that stays with you long after you leave. For those who want expert guidance into the backcountry, the resort’s ski school offers off-piste sessions with local instructors who know the terrain in detail.

Intermediate & Beginner Terrain

Intermediates will find plenty to work with. The cruisers off the Marte chair are wide and rewarding, and the slope breakdown gives a clear picture of what to expect: 15% green, 45% blue, 35% red, 5% black. Beginners have a dedicated area at the base with gentle Poma lifts — Eros 1 and 2, Venus 1 and 2 — and a full Ski & Snowboard School with multilingual instructors offering both group and private lessons. The Snow Garden caters to children aged 4–6; the Olimpos program runs from 6–12.

When Is the Best Time for a Ski Vacation in Las Leñas?

The season runs from late June through October, but the experience varies significantly by month.

July brings the first reliable snowfall and the excitement of opening weeks, though the final two weeks coincide with South American school holidays, so lifts will be busier and the village lively. August and September are the sweet spot: reliable snow, good coverage across all terrain, and the resort operating at full capacity without the peak-holiday crowds. October is the quiet end of season, with lower prices, smaller crowds, and late-season powder that can still be exceptional when a storm comes through.

We track snowpack forecasts throughout the season. Contact us with your preferred travel window and we will tell you exactly what to expect.

Accommodation at Las Leñas Resort

The resort operates as a self-contained ski-in ski-out village, with all accommodation options within easy walking distance of the lifts. At the top end, the Piscis Hotel is the flagship property: a five-star hotel with panoramic Andean views, spa facilities, gourmet dining, and slope-side access. Below that sits a range of apart-hotels and lodge-style properties suited to different budgets and group sizes.

All options in our packages include accommodation inside the resort, which means no daily commute to the slopes and no time wasted on logistics once you arrive.

After the Slopes: Dining, Nightlife & Après-ski

Las Leñas is not just a ski resort. It is a self-contained valley with a social scene that genuinely earns the après-ski label. Once the lifts close, the village comes alive with bars, mountain restaurants, and events that run well into the evening. The food ranges from hearty Argentine mountain staples like locro, empanadas, and grilled meats to more refined dining options at the resort’s hotel restaurants. There is a night slope (Eros II) for those who want to keep skiing after dark.

For many guests, the evenings at Las Leñas become just as much a part of the ski vacation as the days on the mountain.

How to Get to Las Leñas from Mendoza

Las Leñas sits 340 km south of Mendoza city, roughly four and a half hours by road through increasingly dramatic Andean scenery. Most international travelers fly into Mendoza (MDZ airport), and from there we can arrange ground transfers directly to the resort. During peak season, Las Leñas also operates charter flights out of Buenos Aires into Malargüe airport (LGS), approximately 80 km from the resort. San Rafael (AFA) is another option with daily connections from Buenos Aires.

Transportation to Las Leñas is not included in the base packages, but we coordinate it as part of the full trip plan. Ask us when you get in touch.

Why Book Your Las Leñas Ski Vacation with SAK Wine & Travel

You could plan a Las Leñas ski vacation from anywhere in the world. Here is what changes when you book with a local Mendoza operator.

We coordinate the full journey: Mendoza arrival, valley transfer, accommodation inside the resort, and everything in between, so you arrive at the mountain ready to ski, not still sorting out logistics. We speak the language of the resort, the hotels, and the local drivers, which matters more than it sounds when something needs to change last-minute.

We also offer something no international operator can: the ability to combine your Las Leñas ski vacation with a dedicated Mendoza wine experience. Spend two or three days exploring the renowned wineries of Luján de Cuyo or the Valle de Uco, then head south to Las Leñas for the ski portion of your trip. It is a genuinely singular itinerary, world-class skiing and world-class wine, coordinated from a single local team.

Through our SAK In Action sustainability program, we also work to ensure the trips we design respect and preserve the Andean environment our guests come to experience.

Tell us your dates and group size. We will build the rest.

Las Leñas Ski Vacation FAQ

August and September offer the most consistent conditions and the best overall experience. July is lively but busier due to school holidays. October brings quieter slopes, lower prices, and often excellent late-season powder.

Las Leñas has 29 runs across 17,500 hectares of skiable terrain, with a vertical drop of 1,200 meters and a longest uninterrupted descent of 7 km. The slope breakdown is 15% green, 45% blue, 35% red, and 5% black.

Yes. The resort has a dedicated beginner area at the base with low-angle Poma lifts and a full Ski & Snowboard School offering group and private lessons for all ages. The Snow Garden program is designed for children aged 4–6; Olimpos runs from 6–12. The intermediate terrain is wide and accessible, and the resort works well for mixed-ability groups.

Las Leñas is approximately 340 km from Mendoza city, a drive of around four to five hours through the Andes. We coordinate ground transfers as part of the full trip plan — transportation to the resort is not included in the base packages but can be arranged separately.

Most international travelers fly into Mendoza (MDZ) and transfer from there. During peak season, charter flights operate into Malargüe (LGS), 80 km from the resort. San Rafael (AFA) is another option with daily connections from Buenos Aires.

Pricing depends on the package format, accommodation type, and time of season. October is the most affordable; late July and August carry the highest rates. Contact us with your dates and group size and we will send a detailed, no-obligation quote within 24 hours.

All three packages include accommodation with continental breakfast, private transfers within the valley, free use of hotel facilities, and first aid coordination. Lift passes, transportation to Las Leñas from Mendoza, equipment rental, and ski lessons are not included in the base price and can be added on request.

Layers are essential: Andean winters can be cold at night but surprisingly warm and sunny during the day at altitude. Non-negotiables include quality ski goggles, high-SPF sunscreen (UV exposure above 3,000 meters is intense), and a windproof outer layer. Full ski and snowboard equipment is available to rent at the resort if you prefer not to travel with gear.
